Animals used in experiments is increasing

The European Commission has recently published a study on animals used in experiments. It shows that 12,1 million  (!) animals were used different experiments during 2005. Compared with the previous year the amount of animals used in experiments increased for EU-15 (earlier studies on EU27 does not exist). The increase was 3,1 %, or a total of 339,279 animals, according to the study.

Also for my own country, Sweden, the amount of animals in experiments is growing. Compared to 2004 the number increased with 12 % during 2005, to a total of 506,600 animals. This shows that a lot remains to be done in order to reduce, replace and finally abolish animal experiments.
